Gossip Girl: We Love the 80s

Young Lily and Carol
We won't know whether or not the CW picks up Lily, the Gossip Girl spin-off for next season until May 21st, but this week we got a sneak preview of the 80s-themed series following the escapades of a young Lily van der Woodsen. Playing out like an episode of Lost, this week's episode of Gossip Girl flashed back and forth between two blondes -- one present day and the other stuck in the bastion of 80s excess that was Los Angeles.

Seeing Lily in high school had its perks. We got to spend some time with Lily's free-spirited sister, Carol; found out that Rufus alone might not hold the title of love-of-Lily’s-life; and met Serena and Eric's future father (we're anxious to discover how Lily ends up with that snot-nosed prep). Most of all, we got to see Brittany Snow's return to television. Perfectly cast, Snow stands out amongst the other tepid players. Owen definitely does not possess the unmatchable je nais se quoi of Chuck.

And someone please remove Andrew McCarthy from the screen. His middle-aged presence is destroying many an 80s-made fantasy. In addition, No Doubt's much-ballyhooed return didn't make much of a dent or garner much airtime. The brief appearance reeked of a night at the Peach Pit After Dark. We're guessing fashion aficionado Gwen Stefani boasted a tubular wardrobe back in the day, so we were sorely disappointed by her oversized jeans and t-shirt ensemble. If there was ever a time and a place for leggings, this would have been it!

Back on the mainland...er...oops...New York, Blair and the gang prepare for that blessed high school milestone -- prom. While Serena stews another night in jail, refusing to let her mother bail her out on principle, Blair tries to match her real-life dance to the one pasted into her childhood scrap book. Just when everything seems to be going wrong -- the dress, the flowers, the limo -- it becomes apparent that all the foibles are making way for the dream to come true, right down to the luxurious dress in the book. Behind the scenes lies Chuck pulling all the strings to give Blair the prom she’s always desired and voting for her 150 times to win her the prom queen crown.

Let's all pause for a minute and let out a collective "awwwwww." In the midst of all this romantic whimsy, Blair spells out the end for her and Nate. We're a little confused as to why she's making this leap, but if it opens up the door for Chuck, say no more. Dan busts Serena out of jail in time to make the dance and the two share a delightfully drama-free night.

What did you think? While we enjoyed the Lily flashbacks, we can't help but be disappointed that the spin-off took precedence over prom. Yes, you could say next week's graduation ceremony is more important, but in terms of fashion and fiascos, prom is definitely more Gossip Girl. Are you sad to see the season end? What about graduation -- can the group stay together through college?

I voted that they should pick up the spin off! Just don't waste my Gossip Girl episode with the spin off.

I'd watch it. Brittany Snow's eyes entranced me. Haha...

Im probably gonna be hated for this but i seriously didnt care for the 80s flashback nor am i excited about a spin off for a show thats only in its second season! point blank: im just more interested about the kids (in the present)than their lousy parents' past.

Chuck!!!! I love you!

Ya Nate and Blair breaking up was totally out of left field. (Not that I care, whatever gets them out of that chemistry free relationship)

Au contraire, I loved Andrew McCarthy! But don't worry, even if they pick up "Lily" it sounds like he'll be quite the absentee father. And "Lily" is what they are calling it? Really? Snooze. Flashbacks were better than boring old prom. I agree with Sarah on the podcast - Blair, choose yourself. (Is it bad that all storylines find their way back to something BH 90210 did??)
