Supernatural Podcast: "The Benders"

Listen Now

This is a truly disturbing episode with no supernatural beings -- so why was it even written? Now, that doesn't mean it wasn't scary; it absolutely was. We're completely creeped out by this bloodthirsty family. But we're still confused as to how it fits into the season as a whole.

In our "The Benders" podcast, we debate why the writers went this route. We also discuss Dean's puppy-dog-eyes-that-could and learn why no one should ever make fun of Mia's family. Plus, we find out that Sarah would season a person with tarragon -- make of that what you will.

Its been a couple of days since I've listened to this PC but I remember disagreeing on a couple of things.
1. Yes, this Ep is not supernatural in nature but the initial premise of the show wasnt to be all things supernatural. It was to be a scary road show of American folklore and legends. The Benders definitely fall in this category. Uber-creepy
2. While the brothers spent the majority of the Ep separated, the show more than readily expressed the Brotherly connection that's so central. Dean's panic at Sam's disappearance, his plea to the cop. Just going to the cops and using Sam's real name was a big risk to Dean. In the cage, Sam is largely un-panicked and I believe that's do to his certainty that Dean's looking for him.
There is a lot of Subtext going on that's barely touched by the dialog.

Hello Ladies. Another fine PC. The Benders is a good ep, but it's not a favorite.
I would like to comment on two things that you all discussed.

First of all I agree that Dean can be very sincere at times. And when he is it is always 100% genuine. Sam on the otherhand does sincere more often, but he isn't always genuine. Just another part of that yin and yang thing they've got going.

Secondly, it used to bother me that Sam got to always keep his hands clean and avoided making the tough decisions (by always leaving them up to Dean). However, I agree it was done on purpose. Those who watched season 3 know what I'm talking about. Even though Sam was brought up in the hunter's life, he was still sheltered from many burdens.

Anyway thanks ladies.

This was never one of my favourite episodes but it does have its moments. I loved seeing freaked out and overprotective Dean and well... Sammy in a cage?

The Benders did ick me out for sure... it had my 16 year old cousin sleeping with me the night we watched my season 1 DVD's.

And well... Sammy has done some killing... it was a hard road for him to follow... but he did.

Isha, I think Sarah meant that Sam had not killed anyone AS OF THIS TIME. Which is true. And I thought we had all agreed NOT TO SPOIL THE NEWBIES!! I really enjoyed this episode, loved the guest actress Jessica Steen, from Earth2. And I really enjoy these podcasts, ladies. Keep up the good work!!

Hey Jackie, Sarah and Mia

Another great podcast!

I really want to know are you going to start podcasting Supernatural season 4?

I'm a real fan of the Bender family because they are seriously creepy and scary! When Kripke talks about doing a new horror movie on TV every week, this is the certainly the best horror SPN movie!

oh my God, I did not know that history is very interesting that they have done an episode on this family

actually sam has killed--he killed Gordon, Jake, Casey and the Father in Sin City, and he shot the Crossroads Demon...

First, I love this episode. And I loved this podcast.

I don't mind this episode not dealing with a supernatural baddie, because it's still a great horror episode. Plus SPN likes to tackle Urban Legends (like Bloody Mary and Hookman). And the story of the Benders is actually an Urban Legend, that's based on a true story.

Back in the 1870's, the Bender family (also known as "The Bloody Benders") moved to Kansas, where they almost immediately started killing people. And they didn't care who. Townsfolk. Travelers. It was all the same to them. Of course, nobody knew what they were doing. They just knew some men were going missing.

One way the Benders got their victims was that the daughter, Kate, would be talking to them, keeping them distracted, while her father or one of her brothers would sneak up behind them and hit them in the head.

The Benders' killing spree went on for about 18 months. When the authorities finally found out what was going on (thanks to a potential victim that had escaped) the sheriff and a posse (okay, let's call them an angry mob) road out to the Benders place. Of coures, the family was long gone. However, the sheriff and his posse did find a celler that looked like a slaughter house, and over two dozen bodies buried all over the place. And it's a safe bet there were more that were never found...for one reason or another.

A huge reward was put out for the Benders, but they were never caught or seen again. And the Urban Legend says that they probably holed up somewhere isolated and secluded, and started inbreeding, making them even crazier than they were before. And their descendants are still there, carrying on the family "traditions" on anyone unlucky enough to cross their path.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the family in the episode were supposed to be those descendants.

The tale of the Bloody Benders is the type of story that tends to pop into your head when you're driving down deserted roads in rural areas late at night.

another great podcast as always, now I will think of the little girl every day, I will not be able to sleep well ... oh and thanks for a good dose of laughter
