Supernatural Podcast: "Route 666"
Sarah thinks this is the worst episode ever. Mia and I haven't seen enough episodes to say for sure, but it's definitely our least favorite of what we've seen so far.
We're not fans of the script, the concept, or the guest actress. Was the sex scene enough to save this episode? Was Cassie compelling enough to be Dean's old love? Can we really accept a racist ghost truck as the villain... or at all?
Our answer to all of these questions is an emphatic "no!" We can't be alone in our "Route 666" dislike, so join us in the episode-bashing in the comments if you don't like this one, either. But we also know there are a few fans of this one out there -- some of you have already let us know in comments for past podcasts. And we want to hear from you, too (though you probably won't change our minds).

Route 666 or Heart. doesnt matter. they had really similar choreography. heart was just longer. more of the same really, just shoulders and cheeks. I would much prefer to see Dean walk across a room without his shirt on. (laying down makes him look kinda skinny)

sarah: And for those who didn't like the sex scene in Heart.... really? Are you sure you're not dead?
I checked and my steady beating heart says that I am and I still don't like it. I run out of the room whenever they start to show the scene. ;)

I love Route 666! Great episode. I loved seeing that Dean had a "serious" girlfriend at one point in his life. I actually liked Cassie and the actress who played her.
I love everything about Supernatural.

I just think that Dean needs that kinda sassiness that Cassie has to keep him interested and more in the long term rather than the one-night hook-ups that he usually has. although i don't like how Cassie dumped him. i thought she could use more sensitivity.
And i don' think Sam is irritating at all! i thought that's how younger sibs work, needling the older ones until there's a reaction. LOL
I think every eppy of Supernatural has vital character development, so none should be missed. although yes, there are better eppys than this, but hey, i still watch it twice!

Sarah, What you say about Jensen having chemistry with anyone and any thing is true. And, the thing is, I could feel chemistry on Dean's side of the room during the Dean/Cassie scenes. He was sending out the energy, and heat, and sparks. But, when they got to Cassie's side of the room, they'd vanish. Like light sucked into a wormhole or something. Another actress would've taken the energy Jensen was giving her, added to it, and sent it back, and we would've gotten this super charged back and forth. But the actress they chose for Cassie just wasn't up to challenge.
And it's a shame because I remember being psyched for this ep. A woman Dean had actually gotten serious about? That was huge, and I just knew she was going to be awesome. The fact that she wasn't was quite the let down.

"And for those who didn't like the sex scene in Heart.... really? Are you sure you're not dead?"
Sarah - that was a little unnecessary. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and just because you may have liked it, doesn't mean everyone has to like it.

The Heart sex scene was way hotter! At least Madison wasn't a block of wood like Cassie. Jensen didn't have any chemistry with her.
At least Route 666 was not as bad as No Exit or Red Sky or Dream A Little Dream of Me.
And Sam had funny lines in this ep like "I miss conversations that don't begin with 'killer truck'". He was adorable.
He wanted Dean to have his chance with Cassie so he understood his brother better than some people think.

Just wanted to add, that, obviously, what I posted was my opinion, and everyone has their own. *shrug*

Oh hell yeah, a bad episode of Supernatural is still better than most anything on TV. But the good Supernatural episodes -- and the GREAT ones, like Faith -- make the bad ones, like this one, that much more frustrating. I KNOW Supernatural can be extraordinary. I've seen it. It's why I hype the show to my friends and why I begged and pleaded and blackmailed and bribed to get a podcast for the show.
Livy -- Jackie has my Season 1 DVD set, so I can't check what's on the packaging. I think you must be right, because Sera Gamble is a favorite and I'd hate to think she was responsible for this.
I agree that Sam's younger-brother routine was funny for a little while, and that there were a couple of good moments. But overall, I still think this is the worst ep of the series thus far -- the premise was off, the script was too earnest and after-school-specially (Racism is BAD!), the ghost was not menacing, and the casting, especially of Cassie, was dreadful. Jensen Ackles usually has so much chemistry oozing off him that inanimate objects are humping his leg, but there was nothing between him and Cassie. The sex scene from this ep is so much hotter out of context.
And for those who didn't like the sex scene in Heart.... really? Are you sure you're not dead? Because, well, YOWZA! I developed a whole new appreciation for Sam from that scene. Hominah.

Anneabell - I have to disagree with you about "Heart" - I saw absolutely NO chemistry between the characters or the actors. I *hated* the fact that the writers tried to force it down our throats that the characters had so much in common (look she has books on her shelf, so she must like to read, and guess what, Sam likes to read too) *headdesk*
I agree with whomever said that Season 2 had some episodes way worse than Route 666 (and I don't mean No Exit, there were other ones that I have never watched even a second time)

I can't say I hate ANY episode of Supernatural, but "Route 666" is probably one of the weakest. I did like the glimpses we got into Dean, i.e. not being able to/not wanting to lie to someone he loves; that he actually LOVED a girl. It makes his "antisocial/cut yourself off from everyone" attitude in "Skin" a little more understandable. I loved Sam's line, "You told her our big family secret, we do what we do and we shut up about it?". That has totally become my motto. Or it would if I did anything worth shutting up about :). And his "It's just an interesting observation, in an observationaly interesting way." And I gotta say - I enjoyed the sex scene. It was tender and cuddlesome and puts lie to Dean's "wham, bam, thank you ma'am" attitude. I think the boy knows how to treat a woman. And he's so very pretty.
So, to recap: two great lines from Sam, nekkid Dean, vulnerable Dean. The rest of the ep? Meh. But if I had to choose between "Route 666" on an endless loop and any episode of "Grey's Anatomy", I'd choose "Route 666". Except maybe for that ep where Kyle Chandler gets blowed up.
Thanks for the podcast, ladies, a wonderful job as always. Thanks, Jackie, for letting us know you'll be back on your weekly Thursday schedule. I was kinda worried!
Ciao!!

This was the only episode of Supernatural that I have not watched twice... it's just... dumb and all of you saying the sex scene was better than the one in heart... I really beg to differ at least the Sam scene had chemistry! And I cared about the character... I didn't care about Cassie... heck... I didn't even like Cassie!
Worst episode... I have to agree and much worse than anything from season 2! and Sam's my favourite character and he wasn't even in No Exit... so what does that say?

Here's the thing bout this episode, wen i first saw it way back wen it first aired,i kinda liked it,it wasnt the best but it was nice.but then over the years, i read sm serious bashin on this ep on the web,& i was like "did i miss smthing"!!!
Turns out, i did, & it was none other than the steamy love scene!!YUP! it was brutally chopped off by the censor in our country!
but, then wen i finally saw it,i was like that certainly cant be it!!
Neways, the point is, i still dont c it...i mean, dis one does have a few loopholes,But,tagging it as the*worst episode ever* is probably too strong a statement!
it had its moments& i loved the humour!
i personally thought Sam aspect was plain adorable,he was so the younger brother in dis one,he was gettin such a kick out of teasing Dean, but in da end, we can c dat he clearly gets Dean's pain too, wich i found sweet..
plus, we got to see Dean's vulnerable side,& the sacrifies he had to make for the sake of his job, wich was priceless!!
AGREED, Cassie wasnt the best actress, nor the charcter was convincing enuff, but i still liked there interactions, for the sheer sake of Dean, who still managed to pull thru..
As for Killer Racist Truck,i know it was a bit ridiculous, but so were the CGI bugs... i guess, all i m sayin is, if we r aimed at putting it like that, then many things can labelled ludicrous. But, we all kno there so much more to this show than that, so as long as i see an ep where i can diss the performance of the guys, i wouldnt call it the worst ep..*wich doesnt exist* .
sorry for the rambling guys, its just dat i waited 2 wks for anything Supernatural on ur blog& finally to hear so much bashin was kind of a mood killer!!!
hope the nxt cheers me!!

I don't like this episode, too and well i hate Cassie :) This episode maybe the one that i don't like in SuperNaturaL episodes and i watch all of the episodes at least 4 times except Route 666. I've to admit i can be a little jealous :)

If only Cassie had been played by a better actress, then I think I would have loved the episode.
This one was...okay. I was just sat there waiting for the sex scene, which, I completely agree, was SO much better on Youtube than in context with the show.
Agree with 'Em', Jensen Ackles has chemistry with just about anything except Cassie. If you squint with one eye when they kiss, then you can see Jensen having a hot make-out without having to see Cassie's face. :)
I'm watching these episode in line with your podcasts, so I'm just taking Sarah's word for it that Nightmare is better than this.

I listened to this podcast long ago when you first posted it on iTunes so I'm not sure if anything has changed, but you state that Sera Gamble wrote the script. The episode was really written by two guest writers (they usually write the worst episodes) Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner.

I can't say I loved this episode but didn't hate it either. It was actually better on rewatch.
I liked finding out more of Dean's backstory. Finding out Dean had a serious relationship and got his heart kicked in, fleshed out the character even more. It was interesting that another person he loved abandoned him. Dean definately has abandonment issues as we discovered in Skin.
Cassie did suck but the sex scene was hot (way hotter than the one in Heart which was just awkward looking).
I agree that Sam's juvenile "haha Dean's gotta girlfriend" mentality was beyond irritating. But I liked that he got to learn more about his brother. I still think that there is alot that Sam doesn't know about Dean.
I liked the game of chicken between the Impala and the truck and the "I'm gonna kill him" moment. I agree that Sam very cavilier in attitude when he wasn't sure if the plan would work or not. But it rarely occurs to Sam that he is wrong about anything (especially when he is) so it was in character.
I never tell people to skip this one or Bugs (which I liked) because there is vital character info in both episodes.
Thanks Ladies.

Really great podcast, ladies! What can I say, I agree. This is not a good episode. Cassie was abnoxiously annoying, I was the whole episode waiting for her to die a horrible death and I swear it had nothing to do with the fact that she got to do it with Dear Dean. :))
Although, the car chase was awesome and Dean's frustration after finding out that sam wasn't sure that would work was hilarious. And the final scene, just because I got to see Dean with sunglasses lol (I may be wrong, but I think it was the first time he used them) :)
it just gets better and better from here! :) Can we have a double podcast next week? pretty please???

I LOVE ROUTE 666! :)
No, I'm not on drugs and I still like this episode.
I don't mind that nearly everybody hates it. I think you like some topics and you dislike others.
-The whole "you told her" conversation in the car is hilarious
-Cassie is better and more interesting than Leila (Dexter can keep her, I don't really care about her)
-I love the black truck, it isn't scary but looks cute. There is nothing in SPN that really scares me
-Bugs or Wendigo are certainly not better than Route 666
-I think the mother was annoying especially the long monolog at the end
-Dean getting his heart broken (funny)
-Sammy quote: "interesting observation, observationally interesting" (funny)
-Sammy quote: "She dumped you" (ha, ha, ha, ha)
-Dean and Cassie facing each other and talking about stuff
-Dean's answer: "Yeah, me too" and then off to sex :)
-Dean being bossed around by Cassie was really funny
-The sex scene was good and didn't want me to throw up like the Heart scene
-The funniest line: "Don't get all authorative on me! Don't leave the house, please!"
-Seeing why Dean has no serious relationships (got his heart broken by Cassie)
-the chasing scene (great visuals) the impalas looks so great
-Sammy was confident in himself that's why he didn't even think about being wrong
-Dean's "I'm gonna kill him" was also funny
-Sammy driving because Dean gets his heart broken again (oh, so sad)
-Dean hiding his feelings behind sunglasses (Oh, who needs a hug?)

I admit I haven't listened to the podcast yet but I hated this episode. Believe it or not I could live with the racist ghost truck, ridiculous as it was, and Jensen Ackles has such a perfectly gorgeous back the sex scene was worth it just for the extended shots we got of it but oh how I hate Cassie.
We've seen Jensen Ackles have chemistry with walls but the actress was like a blackhole. I'd watch his part of the scenes and could see he was trying to generate something and then it would go to her and it would be like ".........."(aka nothing:)
I think they wanted us to think she was the awesome chick a guy would wish hadn't gotten away but all I could think was "Dean should thank all that is holy and unholy he dodged that bullet". :D She's all "things could work out" until the job involving her family was finished and then it was like "I'm a realist, sayonara babe". Thanks goodness she was but still, way to be a user. She came across as cold(could she look anymore bored as her mother is hysterically crying?), self-centered, high maintenance. You could tell any relationship with her would be all about her and he'd be expected to trail along after her holding her purse.
I put it down to Dean's issues - he thinks he deserves to be treated like dirt.

I love Route 666, and nobody will change my mind, no matter how many people bash it, even you guys. :)
The brother moments are priceless, the fact that both the audience and Sam learn something new about Dean (Sam thought he knew his brother, but he didn't, and to a certain extent, still doesn't), and the car chase scene are all great...and, of course, the love scene (I loved the lighting and the shadows).
I liked the character of Cassie, as written, she was tough, she was educated (and we know how much the show loves to play up college education meaning a person is Zomg!Smart!), and that she was bi-racial.
So, Route 666 may not have been the best episode, but I can think of a number of Season 2 episodes that I think are worse than Route 666. :)
