Supernatural Podcast: "Faith"

Listen Now

Whoa. We're pretty much blown away by "Faith's" lethal combination of heartwrenching decisions, surprising twists, and tearjerking moments. There wasn't a dry eye in the house after we watched this episode.

Dean's at death's door, which means the conflicting Winchester ideologies really come into play -- making us realize that Sam and Dean are not on the same page when it comes to life-and-death situations. In this podcast, we discuss Dean's self-esteem issues, the Reaper's creepy grin, Darla's role, and the painful realization that the brothers just can't save everyone, no matter how hard they try.

You are very welcome. I am beginning to really enjoy the post-podcast chats, because I didn't really get into the series untill much later. Now I see a lot of new things that I hadn't before.
I am still a bit bumped I can't dis Rt 666 though, but the girls said they were working on it.
Hope to see you soon on that comment board...

Thanks!! I never would've thought to look there....I've been checking back here DAILY!!
Oh, and I added my last initial so folks could differentiate between the Ninas (if they cared to). Now I'm just waiting for delivery of my Season 3 DVDs! I just hope to get through the extras before Season 4 starts!!

Cool thanks for the update Nina.

Thank you nina! I only check the cwsource site for the podcast so I didn't know that route 666 is on i-tunes already! thank you, you are a lifesaver honey!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys! So I have been waiting for the latest podcas since last Thursday and I just found it. If you subscribe to iTunes' cw source you get what you need. I think the updates didn't come through here. Enjoy, I am still wondering where to comment on Route 666 though.
Greets

Mmmmm? Geez what happened to last weeks podcast for Route 666??? Mention having two podcasts a week and now the very next week down to ZERO? OUCH! We digg the podcasts Gurlz... keep em coming!

LOL...very true....they need to hurry up and watch! And....where is our Thursday podcast?? I take it back....one podcast a week is OK!!! We don't NEED two.

Nice to meet you aswell! It's Neena, so it's different. And I was constraining myself not giving you any straight examples, 'cause I don't want to spoil others. On the other hand they should hurry up and watch everything ;-)
I am thinking of Devil's Trap Deans conversation... I think if it comes down to it he will. I like their little dark side, they do good all the time but when it comes to eachother...

LOL....so I'm reading the names, then the comments, and I'm thinking to myself, "I don't remember posting this!". I have to ask: is it Neena, or Nine-a? I'm a Nine-a.

It's hard to say about the boys...but I still don't think Dean would trade an innocent's life even to save Sam. I won't ask for specific events that I may have forgotten, since I try to avoid spoiling others, as I would have them avoid spoiling me :)

Nice to meet you, by the way.

Aya,
I don't think somebody would mind the references to already aired episodes! Spoilers are just for non-aired episodes! What are you talking about, I love the "hot-chick reaper" comment. ha, ha, ha

I think Mia and Jackie are pretty good at ignoring Sarah when she tries to convince them that something is bad or evil ;)(listen to Bugs, hilarious)

Okay so I posted last Friday and I came back to look at what the others were saying because I absolutely love this episode.
Ironically there is another Nina here and I totally have to disagree. Nina you said that Dean (and maybe Sam) wouldn't trade a life for another. I am almost certain that if the roles were reversed and Dean had known, he would still save his brother. Fine in general they are against it but if it comes to saving eachother, they will do it! We see many examples in upcoming seasons.
I do agree with you that Dean isn't the runner or the frozen type of guy, he knew what was happening and let it be. A very big arc in the rest of the story.

Still voting for two Podcasts a week (hell I want one every day)

Greets

I totally love your podcasts....and I also can't wait to hear what you ladies say/think after I see the show. Keep it up; I like you guys and the podcast almost as much as I like the shows!!!

Great podcast girls. I love listening to ur opnions i love the way mia just sits quietly in the background then injects some funny comment in, adorable.

can't wait for route 666 i really liked that epi, i think it had a different feel to the rest of the epi's and wasn't all about scary monster/creatures popping up at u and making u jump. It was a more heartfelt epi and I loved vulnerable Dean, although i think the love interest could have been better. Sarah i really wish that u would stop saying how much u hate epi's before mia and jackie actually get to see them, as much as u think it won't make them biased it kinda will make them start watching it with a negative opinion cuz thats all they know. So please can u stop dissing epi's before they've actually seen it. And although most fans do not like that epi for whatever reason alot of us do!!

Also I don't understand why u told them that reaper would come back in again and it would be involving one of the boys. That is a interesting spoiler and some people listening might not have seen future epi's so ur spoiling that for them also.

Anyway i don't mean to rant and I love ur podcasts just addressing some issues that some suupernatural fans have.

Great podcast girls!

Darla being a cool ass-kicking vampire chick,I thought she was annoying in Buffy but interesting view Sarah!

I agree Jackie, Dean's haggard look is so cuuuuuuuute! You definitely want to hug him! And Dean wearing a hoodie, how cute is that? Could Jackie be a little Dean!girl? ;)

I AM SO EXCITED THAT ROUTE
666 IS NEXT! I KNOW THAT SARAH AND A HUGE AMOUNT OF FANS HATE IT BUT I LOVE IT SO I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL SARAH RIPS IT APART!:)

Thank you, deejay, for pointing out that there's room for more than one opinion about Dean's issues with self-esteem. (Man, I've come to hate the very phrase.) I know I'm not unique in thinking of Dean doing his job as if he were a first responder. Firefighters and police officers put themselves at risk without believing they 'deserve to die.' I see Dean taking a healthy pride in the things he does well and having a certain professionalism concerning his job (especially the "saving people" part) falls in that category.

I'm not arguing that Dean isn't messed up. He is - and I wouldn't have him any other way! But I have more concerns about his acceptance of Sam pulling the trigger of what he (Sam) believed was a loaded pistol pointed at Dean. Being unwilling to sacrifice civilians is pure Dean and not the least of the many reasons to love the guy.

I only sort of forgave Sam for what he did in 'Asylum' because I was following Dean's lead. However, Sam won me back over in 'Faith' with his simple "Watch me." I love him for having enough determination - and faith! - to motivate Dean into at least going through the motions of looking for a miracle.

I have to agree with Rachel; it startled me to hear information about future reapers. Why do that?

Definitely add me to the list of those who consider this one as ranking among the most awesome episodes. As you said in the podcast, it is pivotal for so much of what is down the line.

Loving the podcast guys!!i guess i m getting addicted to it! i find myself nodding along thru most of it.
Loved 'Faith',although, seein it again i kinda revisited the Heebie jeebies that i got the first time around!its just that the concept of Faith healing,*even minus the reaper* kinda freaks me out!
other than that,i loved dis ep more now, coz it marked the introduction of several recurring issues that r elaborated later in the show.
saw the first real glimpse of Dean's low self esteem issues& Sam's desperation to save Dean,
loved Sam's "i'm not gonna let you die,period."remark.wich i think in retrospect has a whole new signifiacance.
& i do think Sam would have still gone thru with it after knowin the truth coz i think Sam might be the voice of reason, but when it comes to Dean,he has differnt ideologies altogether!
& lastly, as for Dean not being picky of women, i dont think thats true, coz his"i m not gonna die in a hospital, where nurses rnt even pretty",remark kinda said otherwise.I think he cares bout the looks but it certainly doesnt always govern his actions& he can see past it too.To be fair,Layla was reasonably attractive. a little older though!!

&i second the motion of 2 podcast a week!hope u guys consider it!

I'm throwing in my vote for two podcasts a week!

Jackie, when you said that Dean seemed to be frozen (I assume you meant) in fear of the Reaper, I'd just like to point out that Dean is NOT a frozen-in-fear kinda guy. Nor is he a runner. As Rachel mentioned below-thread, Dean felt guilty that an innocent died so that he could live. In his viewpoint, he shouldn't be alive, so it was only fair that HIS death could save Layla. As you will see throughout this series, Dean would never trade something that doesn't belong to him, i.e. another person's life, to save someone else, and especially not to save himself.

Sam's call to John....*sigh*. That man SO needs to be beaten about the head and shoulders. This is the first time we see that Sam is willing to do almost anything for his brother. Would he have chosen this if he'd known lives were being traded. I don't know. Maybe, but I'd like to think not. We KNOW Dean wouldn't. But from some of the things we've seen of Sam in future episodes....maybe.
That man can be one freakin' huge, very well-formed, gray area.

And I agree with DeeJay....Dean appreciates women. The man cannot NOT flirt with a woman. I don't think Layla was meant to be a love interest, or even someone so beautiful Dean was overcome. Dean is VERY protective of the innocent. It was her circumstance that made him connect with her, not her beauty. Although if you ever get a chance to watch Julie Benz as Darla on Angel, you'll see what a luminescent beauty she really is.

I agree, Faith was a great episode. I loved the serious overtone and the faith issues. It's not often a show like Supernatural will dare to explore such sensitive issues.

I though Jensen did a wonderful job playing Dean's pain at the thought of being alive becaus esomeone else died in his place.

I have to disagree, I think Dean would have been just as willing as Sam if the roles were reversed.

Great Pod-Cast! I am also not looking forward to Route 66... It is the only episode int he whole series I have not watched at least twice! However... I may watch it soon so I at least can comment on your podcast=p

I have to say Faith was one of the best episodes ever. Jensen was, of course, awesome as ever and I loved all the emotions that he put Dean through in the one episode. From badass, to dying, to suspicious, to caring and on and on. He really gave Dean the qualities that made me believe everything he went through. Great job. I also think this is one episode where Sam was strong. I liked his determination to save Dean no matter what cost.

Truly a great episode and will forever stay as one of my ten top favorites. Used to be five, but man this show has some great epis.

Sam broke my heart in this episode. His teary face at Dean's bedside, his phone call to John where he's trying to stay calm and strong. You could see his heartbreak.

He really came through for Dean right through the end when he arranged for Layla to meet Dean because he knew what Dean was feeling.

Sam, you really are a wonderful brother.

As someone who's become addicted to these podcasts, I have to say I'd also love it if you did two a week. Like Dean might say, that would be awesome. :D

Also, about Dean and women, here's the thing. It's not that he will take whatever he can get at any given time. It's that he truly appreciates women of all kinds. So he can look at a woman many guys might look past and find something very appealing and attractive about them. Of course, that doesn't mean he'd say no to a woman who looked like a supermodel. But a woman doesn't have to look like a supermodel to catch his eye. (And I wish I could say more, but don't want to get spoilery.)

Also, it's not that Dean thinks he deserves to die, or he wants to die. It's more that, if it's between him and someone else, Dean is likely to think the other person has more to live for. After all, they have friends, families, jobs, homes, *lives.* He's just a guy who travels all over and doesn't have many roots or ties to speak of.

Another fine PC girls. "Faith" is one of my top 10 favorite episodes of the series. It provided great character insight, touching brotherly moments, a creepy monster of the week and even some humor.

Jensen just broke my heart in this one. He did such an amazing job showing Dean's rather complex and damaged psyche. It's just so sad that Dean genuinely believes that his life is somehow less important than other people's. Even after watching for 3 seasons it still astonishes me that this selfless, noble and heroic man has such a low opinion of himself (thanks John).

Another thing that was so great about this ep was Sam's determination to save Dean. Up until this point Sam sometimes acted like Dean was just some unwanted intrusion in his life. Therefore it was great seeing Sam so desparate to save Dean that he never considered what the consequences might be. Having said that, I think that Sam felt remorse for Marshall Hall's death but not enough to regret Dean being healed. And I'm okay with that.

I really liked the way that "Faith" explored the grey area with both brothers. It was done in such a way that neither one was established as right or wrong.

Also, it was great seeing Julie Benz again. I thought that she did a fantastic job as Layla. Though I agree that she looked (and is) older than Dean/Jensen, I still felt that there was a sweet chemistry between them and loved their interactions.

Now, the Reaper was so freaking creepy in the best possible way. I liked that Dean was the only victim who didn't try to run away from it. Establishing that he was willing to die so that Layla could live. Poor Dean, the boy does need a hug.

By the way did anyone else find pale, sickly Dean blindingly hot or is it just me?

Another wonderful podcast!
The fun thing about those podcasts for me isn't so much revisiting the episodes, most of which I know by heart right now even though I've only been in the fandom for a few months.
Rather it's thinking ahead, trying to guess what you guys will have to say about the episodes.
You covered pretty much everything I so love about Faith as an episode, it was a real pleasure and fun experience listening to it. Now, if I hadn't lent out my season 1 DVDs I'd love to watch the episode again - the same thing happened after listening to what you had to say about Scarecrow last week.
I have to say I can hardly wait to see what your podcasts for the later episodes of the season are going to look like, everything from Shadow onwards is something I'm extremely giddy with anticipation about.
Just thought I'd leave a comment once, after religiously listening to your podcasts over the past weeks. Great job, please keep going with them even past season 1. I hope you won't be able to stop once it gets *really* good ;-)
Laura

Hi ladies
so I am from across the ocean (Belgian to be exact) and I have been listening to your podcasts for a few weeks now and I agree almost always. So I thought I'd leave a comment this time. I wish you'd post two episodes a week because at this rate the show will be over before you reach S3 (or weren't you planning on podcasting every season?)
And specifically with Faith I think you should've noticed that Dean is wearing a hoodie wen he arrives in Nebraska, and he looks so adorable!
That's all really, I love the show (I think it's often underrated), I love your comments, looking forward to next week.
Greets from this side of the pond.

I agree that this is the best episode of season 1 (with Devil's Trap a close second).

Dean's esteem issues really come alive in this episode (we'll see the second run in Something Wicked). He is alive because an innocent was sacrificed in his place. When the reaper comes to him in exchange for Layla, he stands there because he knows that he isn't supposed to be alive in the first place, and he's willing to exchange his life for hers. A great Dean arc started here, which Season 2 just shot out of the ballpark! We already knew about Dean's protectiveness of his little brother, but Sam's protectiveness of Dean opens here too. So much love for this show.

Can't believe you spoiled about the future reaper!

Digg the podcasts! Digged this episode. Thanks girls! Hey can't we get a fast track of like two epis on a friday now that oth season 1 podcast is done? Would be so great to get through Season 1 of Supernatural by the time Season 4 airs, just a thought.

I loved Dean & Layla!!!
the "tender" moment at the end,
just was heartbreaking.

LOL It was sad too, but Dean & Layla
-sigh-

LOL I cant wait till you guys see Meg again,
LOL random change of topic
