Jared Padalecki Hits the Big Time with 3-Pic Deal

Jared Padalecki

According to The Hollywood Reporter, congratulations are in order for Jared Padalecki. The magazine reports that Jared has a three-picture deal to play artist Thomas Kinkade, the "Painter of Light" and America's most collected living artist, for Lionsgate Films. First up, he'll be starring alongside screen legend Peter O'Toole in "The Christmas Cottage," which starts filming in Canada this month. Expect the film to hit theaters around - surprise! - Christmas.

We confess to experiencing a little mental whiplash when we heard the news - Thomas Kinkade is a lot different from Sam Winchester and Jared's most recent movie roles. We're used to seeing Jared involved in gory death and blood and torture and angst, not life-affirming feel-good pictures. And Thomas Kinkade is about as anti-angst as they come: he paints idyllic cottages, sun-dappled lighthouses, detailed church portraits - heck, he even makes Graceland look wholesome. It's quite a switch for a guy whose last several projects leaned more towards the gruesome.

Still, we're thrilled that Jared is getting his due as a leading man, and it's got to be a nice change not to have to wash off dried blood after a day's filming. And getting to work with Peter O'Toole? That's amazing! He's been in some of the greatest movies ever made. It's an incredible opportunity for a young actor.

Just promise us one thing, Jared - don't get suckered into a drinking contest with Peter. He's even more legendary for his drinking skills than he is for his acting chops.

What do you think of the news? Will you be lining up to see Jared in a feel-good picture, or do you prefer him in more hard-boiled fare?

Congrats Jared!! I wish him well in his endeavours! And he's working with peter o toole! That's fabulous!

I'm extremely happy for Jared to have this opportunity!! While I love Jared, I'm gonna wait to hear more info about the movie and maybe see the previews before I decide on if I'll go see the movie!! I'm not one to just go see a movie because an actor I like is in it! LOL

Congrats Jared and good luck on the project!!!!

I'm very happy for Jared that he has landed a leading role! And working with Peter O'Toole has to be exciting just because of who he is! I'm not worried that Jared will have no time for SN.

SO HATS OFF TO YOU JARED! YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF YOUR MANY FANS IN WHATEVER YOU DO!!!!

Congrats to Jared for getting a movie deal. Thomas Kinkade's work I am not to thrilled with. Basically, get yourself a paint by number and you can do his lovely generic paintings on your own.

I too am glad to see that Jared is branching out and am thrilled that he's a leading role alongside movie greats like Peter O'Toole and Marcia Gay Harden. Jared's growth as an actor has been (IMO) phenominal this season. (Not that Jensen is any slouch - his beyond fabulous work with Dean's character is probably the main reason I will always be a Dean-girl!)

As for the movie itself, I think that it is far too early to be judging the quality of the picture; yes, it's being (partially) produced by the artist himself, but that I don't think you can discount this movie based on that fact alone, and perhaps it will turn out to be a feel-good, family Christmas movie, that also doesn't mean that it's going to be terrible, it just means that it won't appeal to certain people - all movies are like that!

So, congratulations Jared and I look forward to following yours and Jensen's career for many years to come!!!

What a great opportunity for Jared. I'm sure he'll do an amazing job and make the best of his experience.

Katie said "I actually think House Of Wax is starting to look better in comparisson."

Ouch. I just watched that, and... ouch. Anything with Peter O'Toole and (as has just been reported) Marcia Gay Harden is going to beat anything with Paris Hilton, no matter what the subject matter.

The film definitely doesn't sound like my idea of a good time, but I'm starting to wonder, based onthe quality of the actors they're casting. We're talking movie gods and Oscar winners here. They can't all have a desperate need for money to pay off a bookie or something, can they?

The thing I read about the movies made it seem like it would be a story about the painting, that incorporated biographical elements of the painter's life. Not so much a direct telling of the painters life.

Now, the paintings are really bright and fluffy and all, but I'm kind of looking forward to seeing Jared in something happy and fluffy, especially if this is and actual christmas movie, and hits screens during the winter hiatus next year (thinking positive), and given a general feel of what might be happening with Sam and Dean in the new season (thinking positively again) some happy stuff might be good.

In any case, congratulations to Jared, and I hope he has fun with it!

I am happy for Jared he got a movie. However this movie sounds so lifetime movie Hallmarky I will definatly not be seeing it. I hope this does Not interfear with Supernatural though. To be honest I am more excited about seeing Ten Inch Hero b/c I love Jensen and think he is the better actor of the 2. Not my cup of tea but if Jared likes it and it gives him some reconition good for him. I actually think House Of Wax is starting to look better in comparisson.

Jeez, Galveston - must you complain about other Supernatural fans on TwoP? People have different views, are you incapable of *not* badmouthing other fans that disagree with you?

Congratulations to Jared. I can't wait to see him in these movies!

Congrats to Jared. This is a good opportunity for him to try something new.

For those who think any movie will do though, please think again; a movie can make or break an actor. Hopefully this will be ok. Getting a chance to work with the great Peter O'Toole is in itself a great opportunity.

I wish Mr. Padalecki a lot of luck and hope the movie deal works ok.

Just as a note to Kelly, and others - whether those are just rumors or not, please please PLEASE use spoiler warnings. That was the first I'd heard about the finale, and I wish I hadn't.

And it'll be interesting to see how they sustain three movies about Kinkade, but with two great actors, at least we know it's in good hands.

These movies sound dreadful. I want to see the dark underbelly of the kitchy art world, not a self-aggrandizing autobiography by its crown prince. O'Toole is a has-been, but maybe Jared is excited about getting the chance to work with him. I'd like to think so anyway--anything's better than the thought that Jared actually respects Kinkade.

If CW stars want to stretch themselves, I wish they'd go for freaky indie cinema rather than Middle America pablum. You're breaking my gore-loving, God hating, West Coast liberal heart here, Jared. I know you're a Texan, but how about a bit more of that gun-toting frontier spirit and a little less of the Christian feel-good stuff?

If it gets shockingly good reviews not from Christian/family/mentally incapacitated media, I'll go see it. Otherwise, not a chance!

Sheesh, it's sounding like a convention of the oh so cynical TWOP faithful...

They can't help it. It's their DENSITY to act that way. Isn't that witty? I read that joke about 6,982 times there. ;)

Getting back on topic, kudos to Padalecki for trying something outside the action/adventure or horror genre which, fun as they are, can really pigeonhole actors. I'm not a fan of Kinkade, but I'm happy that Jared has a lead role that could be a stepping stone for him. You have to get your foot in the door somehow. Working with O'Toole will make it worth it. The man starred in Lawrence of Arabia for crying out loud. A young actor would be nuts to turn down a project with him. Who knows? It might be good.

Yes. Jared should say, "I'm sorry, Mr. O'Toole, but I can't work with you because the average Supernatural fan wouldn't enjoy a feel good film. I'd love to listen to stories about the making of 'The Lion in Winter' but those clever, witty Supernatural fans wouldn't like it. I pass."

Right. Just how self important are we SPN fans getting that we're disparaging Jared for getting a lead role in a film like this? If you enjoy Jared's work, be thrilled because it's good for his career. I don't give a flying elephant's persqueeter about whether or not I like Thomas Kinkade's paintings or not. Sheesh, it's sounding like a convention of the oh so cynical TWOP faithful, who think they're so witty and clever, in here. Nobody needs that.

Congratulations to Jared. I hope the film project is a success. Who gives a damn if Kinkade's a nut? If the script is good, I don't.

Don't panic -- I can't imagine this news meaning Jared won't have time for Supernatural. This is the sort of just-for-the-hiatus project that will fit into Supernatural's shooting schedule. And since the first movie, at least, is filming in Vancouver, it means he won't even have far to travel.

I think it's great for Jared to branch out and try different types of roles. Kudos to him!

To sillykelly because Kelly does not think JP is such a great actor does not mean she is an envious DeanGirl. Please refrain from sounding immature and spiteful. As far as you know, she may not even watch Supernatural.

That being said, I wish Mr. Padalecki a lot of luch and congrats on this movie. But yeah, subject matter? Not interesting. 3 movies? Mr. Kinkade is producing right? Hmmm.

I love Jared but that movie will suck!
Not because of actors or crew but for the lame story.
Jared should do
action/sci-fi/horror movies or at least a good drama with a solid story, maybe a thriller.

And why a Christian movie? Not exactly what your average Supernatural fan likes to see.

And what about the Asylum convention?
And the show? A three movies deal while still doing Supernatural?

I don't like this!

What's that Kelly poster babbling about? Jared is an amazing actor.
I can't stand those deangirls, envy much?

This movie will probably be one I watch while it's 2 in the morning and I can't sleep & it's the only decent movie on the movie channels, lol. Otherwise, I won't be going out of my way to catch it in the theater or rent it from the video store.

But despite all that, congrats to Jared for landing the role!

Seriously? And a 3 movie deal? About that guy? Ok, that just strikes me as hilarious. I don't see it. Unless they were like Lifetime movies or something. lol.

Oh, Jared. Of course, I don't think Jared's that great of an actor so I guess you can't be too choosey.

Hi. Yes that is great news!
I'm really happy for him and wish him well in all his endeavours. He is a good actor and deserves a change of role. However, he shall always remain for me the ever good natured Sam Winchester in Supernatural who we've come to love and respect. Alas I hope this will not be the begining of the end for Jared's involvement with the Winchester brothers. Unofficially of course, if one must take into account the rumours of Jared's character dying in the second season finale, I should be extremely saddened! Whether given the choice of seeing him in a sentimental drama or suspense fare I would take the latter of course!

I agree that Kinkade is no Matisse. But hey, Jared getting a three movie-deal is awesome.

There are rumors that Kinkade is an alcoholic and that he has 'shady' business practices. Hopefully the movie will touch on that.

I honestly do not see how they could make 3 movies, but oh well, more screen time for Jared!

I'm pleased for Jared that he's got this opportunity to work with Peter O'Toole, but for myself, I'm dismayed that the chosen project is about Kinkade. I'm not a fan of his work to say the least. I've a degree in Art History and Kinkade's work makes me cringe. To me it's the worst kind of chocolate-box twee and I'd rather Jared wasn't involved, especially since I understand that Kinkade is financing this project (and possibly writing the script too).
